I owe you all an apology. Reality reared its ugly head. It’s very hard to become readjusted to things after you’ve been gone for a while. At least, that is what it feels like to me. But, as a thanks for your patience in dealing with me and my complete lack of reliability over these past two weeks, I have some news to share with you!
Unfortunately, it’s not all good news. I like treating bad news like a bandage, so let’s go on and rip it right off, shall we? I found out this past week that my contract at work is ending sooner than I initially thought it would. My replacement has already been found, which I’m happy about, but I’m sad that my time is going to be cut short much quicker than I anticipated. The good news? I will be able to chat with you lovelies even more! And, since I will have a little more free time on my hands (between running a house, being mom/teacher to a toddler, and drinking all the coffee), I am also going to try a new business venture. I’m going to bake! Is anyone else as excited about this as I am?
Now, I’m no Martha Stewart, but I can make some pretty tasty pies and cakes. However, the niche I’m trying to put my foot forward in is cookies. It’s exciting and terrifying, all at once. Since I’ve chosen this new path, I decided to go ahead and update our kitchen mixer. I have the Kitchen Aid stand mixer in a gorgeous blue color! While I was excited about the color, I was more excited about the sales price (My local Target had it for $199!!). However, now that I’ve seen it in person, there’s one thing that pops into my head: Doctor Who! I saw a Kitchen Aid somewhere that had a Tardis stencil or decal and I am dying to get my hands on one. Of course, I am also excited to see just what this puppy can do, but that will come in time.
I did practice my cookie decorating skills today. Of course, I did something super easy and that was more than likely to be accepted by my finicky toddler. Hello there, Pokemon theme. *waves* I’m glad I decided to try this out before getting too ahead of myself. I think I have a more realistic idea of just how much room for growth I have, both in decorating and baking. Let me tell you, cookies are so different from cakes and pies! I’m still working on my recipes, but I’ll be sure to keep you updated, and feel free to make suggestions. I’m looking at either shortbread or sugar cookies. Those seem to be the “go to” when it comes to custom cookies. Here is my attempt:
As you can see, I both need a better camera, and need to work on my lines. However, I now understand, from a first-hand perspective, why cookie experts prefer using Royal Icing and making their own. I can only imagine how much better my control would be with a looser consistency of icing. But, I don’t think I did bad. Yes, it was super simple, but it was also free hand and using very limited supplies. I can only go up from here! Thankfully, there are so many blogs out there that provide amateurs like myself with amazing advice and aspirations. One that I am obsessed with right now is Sweet Sugarbelle. I love that she’s relatively local to me, too. Well, as local as you can be in this giant state, anyways.
